William Lanner, the last Tasmanian man.
The Tasmanians were completely lost to genocide in the 1800s.
I can’t even imagine what it must have been like to be one of the last of a group of people. He had to watch his entire population be wiped out, lost every single person that he knew, and died knowing that his entire culture was just gone forever. After his death, scientists cut apart his body for souvenirs (one even made a tobacco pouch out of his skin) because they thought the Tasmanias were the missing link between humans and apes…
This picture makes me want to cry. His eyes are so sad.
the worst couples are the ones that look like they could be related
the best couples are the ones that are related.
I was reading some interesting stuff in Jared Diamond’s The Third Chimpanzee about sexual selection. Basically, research shows that the more things a couple has in common the longer the relationship is likely to last (the highest correlation was in long term marriages and the lowest in those who were just dating). This includes physical traits, even really obscure ones like length of middle finger, distance between eyes, and length of earlobe. Even more interesting was that we are often most attracted to people who are similar to our parents and siblings. Gotta love science for pointing out things that we really probably didn’t want to know.
